Event Description
The visioning process has now reached the critical stage of the design of a future overarching structure to implement the research agenda. The aim of the February meeting is to again bring together the key stakeholders to co-design a new initiative to promote earth system research for global sustainability. This transition meeting will explore the concept for a new global initiative that includes, but goes beyond, the current structures and that fully integrates natural and social sciences and different scales from global to local. Designing a mechanism to effectively address the Grand Challenges in a systematic and integrated way is a major undertaking that can only work if it has the buy in and input of all the necessary partners.
In response to requests at the June 2010 meeting, a preliminary SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis of the existing global research and observation programmes in this area is being conducted and there will be an opportunity to contribute to finalizing the analysis at the meeting. It is expected that this will help in matching research opportunities and the needs and expectations of sponsors and users within the framework of the Grand Challenges.
