We model the air but not the birds, we model the ocean but not the fish, we model the soil, but not the lowly worms. We build our asphalt wonderlands, and oh! so carefully, calculate the impermeable area and dig our stormwater retaining ponds, but we barely wonder, “Where did all the animals go?”

Perhaps we can do better? We are causing the sixth Great Extinction, and as we slaughter all these species, we ought to record at least some of their names and how they died.

There are still lots of uncertainties about the quality of human life and other species in view of the rapidly changing land-surface and its consequent interactions with the lower atmosphere. Gathering more information about this will help to redirect investments and draw up appropriate response to ensure human survival.
